Richard Irvin’s Building Services Division received the “Best Electrical Safety Project” award for 2008 at the annual SELECT Electrotechnical Awards dinner, held in Glasgow's Radisson SAS Hotel.
The Best Electrical Safety Project 2008 is recognised across the industry as a bench mark for innovation, energy, commitment and a dedication to work to the highest standards possible.
Richard Irvin Building Services Division attained the accolade having developed an in-house training initiative to ensure all its engineers are fully trained in electrical isolation procedures.
Mark Girling, Richard Irvin’s Electrical Director, who received the award on behalf of the company, said: “Too many avoidable deaths from electrocution are occurring in the UK construction industry.
“Although the Health & Safety Executive is actively promoting safe isolation throughout the industry, it is up to each company to implement their own procedures.
“The scheme we have developed means all our engineers are trained to the highest level and always suitably equipped with the correct skills and tools, ensuring safety remains paramount.
“Safety is a key priority across our whole organisation and we are therefore extremely honoured to have won the SELECT award. It is all the more satisfying that the major part of our safety training was conducted in-house at our purpose built training facility within our new premises.
“If each company in our industry were similarly committed to proper training, I am confident that the number of deaths across the industry would be significantly reduced.”
Richard Irvin was the only company in the North East to receive an award at the dinner.
